About the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1946, more than a decade before Alaska became a state, the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra has grown from a small community ensemble into one of Alaska's most celebrated cultural institutions. Following its landmark 80th Season under the leadership of Music Director Elizabeth Schulze, the ASO performs at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and reaches tens of thousands of Alaskans each year through concerts, education programs, and community initiatives. The ASO has been described as “a cultural powerhouse for Alaska that is innovative, accessible, and always a bit unpredictable,” and its vision, Great Music for Every Life, drives everything it does.

The ASO's programming spans a Classic Series of full orchestra concerts with world class guest artists, an imaginative Pops series, film and multimedia performances, and cross cultural collaborations that reflect the richness of the Anchorage community. Beyond the concert hall, the ASO connects students and families through its Young People's Concerts and school based programs, supports young musicians through the Mary and Lucian Cassetta Music Scholarship Competition, and opens its doors to underserved community members through its Music for My Neighbors initiative.

About the Role

The Graphic Design and Social Media Manager leads day to day graphic design and social media content creation for the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, producing the visual materials patrons see across print, digital, and social channels, from program books and posters to Instagram and Facebook content. This role reports directly to the Executive Director and works closely with all ASO staff, media partners, musicians, the Board, and other stakeholders across the organization.

This is a hands on creative role suited to someone who wants to be the primary designer and social media voice for a community institution, and who wants to grow their skills within a small, mission driven team.

Core Responsibility

Design and produce consistent, on brand visual and social content, across print, digital, and social channels, that supports ticket sales and subscriber renewal, under the direction of the Executive Director.

We see this role growing in scope and responsibility over time as the ASO's marketing function matures, and we're looking for someone excited to grow with it.

Key Responsibilities

Social Media and Content

•      Manage day to day posting and community engagement across the ASO's social media channels

•      Develop social copy and creative in line with ASO brand voice (“your ASO”) and visual identity

•      Maintain a social content calendar in coordination with the Executive Director, aligned to concerts, campaigns, and season milestones

•      Respond to comments and messages in a timely, on brand manner, flagging anything sensitive to the Executive Director

Print and Design Materials

•      Design and produce print and display materials for concerts and events, including program books, brochures, posters, and lobby/foam board signage

•      Ensure all designed materials are consistent with ASO brand standards (colors, typography, logo usage)

•      Coordinate with printers or vendors for production and delivery timelines

•      Assist with content collection and copy editing for concert program books

Email and Audience Communications

•      Draft and schedule patron and subscriber emails (renewal reminders, concert announcements, season updates) for Executive Director review and approval

•      Help maintain email and audience segmentation lists in coordination with CRM data in EvolvArts

•      Support consistency in tone, timing, and brand voice across outbound communications

Website Support

•      Post routine updates to the ASO website (concert listings, event details, page refreshes) as directed

•      Flag content gaps or outdated material to the Executive Director

Analytics and Reporting

•      Track basic social and email engagement metrics and compile simple performance summaries for the Executive Director

•      Note trends or content that performs well to inform future posts

Other Duties

•      Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Required Qualifications

•      Portfolio or work samples demonstrating graphic design skills (print and/or digital) required for consideration

•      1 to 3 years of experience in graphic design, social media, or a related creative field

•      Proficiency with design tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar

•      Strong writing skills and comfort developing content for social media and email

•      Familiarity with major social platforms (Instagram, Facebook) and scheduling tools such as Sprout Social

•      Organized, deadline oriented, and comfortable managing several small projects at once

•      Must reside in the Anchorage/Mat-Su area; valid driver's license and reliable transportation required

•      Ability to work some evenings and weekends for concerts and events

•      This role involves a mix of desk based work and occasional physical tasks, including the ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

•      Interest in or experience with performing arts, nonprofit, or community organizations

•      Basic photography or videography skills

•      Familiarity with email platforms (Constant Contact) or CRM/ticketing systems

•      Genuine enthusiasm for live music and the Anchorage community

•      Reliable and proactive, comfortable executing a plan without needing constant direction

•      Strong eye for brand consistency and voice

•      Comfortable asking questions and flagging issues rather than guessing

•      Enjoys being part of a small, close knit team

•      As with all roles at a small nonprofit, this position may occasionally support other functional areas of the organization, such as concert operations, patron services, or development, as needs arise

Reporting and Structure

•      Reports to: Executive Director

•      Works closely with: ASO staff, Board, Music Director and musicians, outsourced media agency, and other partners as needed

Compensation and Benefits

•      Full time, permanent, non-exempt position

•      Hourly rate $26 to $30, commensurate with experience

•      Eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable law

•      This position offers flexibility for hybrid remote work, with regular in office presence expected for concerts and events

•      Benefits include parking, an unlimited leave program, and complimentary concert and event tickets to all ASO activities

•      This position does not include employer sponsored health insurance
