2010 Mary & Lucian Cassetta
Music Scholarship Competition

The Mary and Lucian Cassetta Scholarship is a $1,000 award given to one talented high school senior pursuing advance studies at a recognized music school or music camp.  Instrumentalists and vocalists are both encouraged to apply.

Established in memory of avid arts supporters, Mary and Lucian Cassetta, the scholarship was established to encourage development of musical talent in young Alaskans.

The selection process includes a live audition and short oral interview with a three-judge panel. Competition will take place Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the Sydney Laurence Theatre, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

Audition times will be assigned after the application deadline.  To be considered, applications must be postmarked no later than March 26, 2010.

World Music Jam:
Bridging Cultural Traditions through Music

Over 7,000 Anchorage area students attend the ASO Young People’s Concerts each season. These concerts are created especially for fourth, fifth and sixth grade students, to introduce them to symphonic music and, hopefully, inspire them to participate in an instrumental music program. Prior to the YPC performances teachers utilize educational packets in the classroom including cds and fun learning activities.

This year’s YPC is an all-new program with a focus on world music.  It explores the influence folk music has on symphonic composers and features music from across the globe. The Young People's Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, January 26, 2010 for Anchorage School District students and again April 20, 2010 for Mat-Su, private and homeschool children.  For many, it will be their first symphony concert.

In preparation for the Young People’s Concerts, the Anchorage Symphony works together with the Anchorage School District, developing a packet including lesson ideas and study guide activities based on National and ASD standards and benchmarks. This packet will be available for download beginning in early December.

Coaching in the Schools

Band and orchestra instructors at the middle and high school level have requested assistance to provide specialized attention to their diverse instrument groups.  The ASO and the ASD have worked together to create a program which utilizes musicians from the Anchorage Symphony to visit schools sharing their musical expertise.  Throughout the past several years, Anchorage Symphony musicians have spent hundreds of hours coaching band and orchestra students throughout the Anchorage and Mat-Su School Districts.  Coaching in the Schools reaches middle school and high school band and orchestra students, many of whom cannot afford private music lessons.  This program is offered to schools and students free of charge.
